Exploring identity and affinity: Myanmar students learning spaces on the southernmost border between Thailand and Myanmar

Siriporn Somboonboorana

Abstract

The physical boundary delineating Thailand and Myanmar symbolizes both opportunities and challenges for social mobility and economic progress. Additionally, it creates a division between these two nations across dimensions such as cultures, politics, economies, languages, and ethnic identities. This study aims to closely examine the intricacies of communities situated on Khonthi Island (Pak Nam Island) within the southernmost border region between Thailand and Myanmar. Additionally, the project aims to investigate the identity and interconnection of students from Myanmar by means of participating in art-based activities such as painting, performance, and community survey expeditions. The application of the ethnographic research method was employed to illuminate the power structures and intersectionality within the intricate contexts of this region. Simultaneously, this approach offers researchers an avenue to provide marginalized communities with a platform to share their experiences and perspectives.
