Abstract

This research applies furniture design principles to create rocking chairs from retired oil palm trees for children aged 3–5, adding value to material that would otherwise be discarded or burned. The feasibility of reusing unused resources to create value and reduce agricultural waste was assessed. The research methodology comprised designing 3 types of rocking chairs: lion, gorilla, and crocodile. Experts in academic design, professional design, and materials and production assessed the quality of the rocking chairs. The sample group included teachers, parents, and preschool children, totaling 320 people. The research instruments comprised satisfaction assessment forms and industrial standard strength tests. The results demonstrated that the gorilla-shaped rocking chair received the highest score of 4.84 out of 5.00, passing all standards of strength tests. Teachers rated the chair highest in terms of environmental friendliness (4.60 out of 5.00), while parents placed the greatest importance on reasonable pricing (4.37 out of 5.00). This research is in line with the sustainable development goals (SDGs) in the areas of economy, industry, and environmental conservation. It demonstrates the potential of reusing oil palm wood to create value-added products by applying design principles to develop eco-friendly rocking chairs from agricultural waste.
