Empowering Pre-service Teachers Through Collaborating with ChatGPT to Explore Smartphone Colorimetry
Abstract
Collaborating with ChatGPT offers significant benefits for pre-service teachers by enhancing their understanding of colors and facilitating the implementation of smartphone-based colorimetry in modern classrooms. ChatGPT provided tailored outlines of learning domains related to colors, spanning both scientific and artistic perspectives while adapting responses to the user’s background and queries. Beyond theoretical insights, discussions with ChatGPT about experimental findings generated valuable ideas for planning laboratory lessons. In the experimental phase, the illumination source and the distance between the smartphone camera and colored objects were varied to investigate their effects on smartphone colorimetry. Red, Green, and Blue (RGB) parameters were highly susceptible to changing illuminations and distances from 5 to 15 inches. On the other hand, Hue, Saturation, and Value of brightness (HSV) parameters exhibited smaller variations with the camera distance. Importantly, the change in illumination from a fluorescent lamp in ambience to a smartphone flashlight in a box did not significantly affect the H value. Based on these findings, ChatGPT recommended the use of the H parameter for smartphone colorimetry in both classroom settings and everyday applications. Despite limited implementation in the teacher-education program, this study reveals that the integration of ChatGPT-assisted laboratory activities with smartphone effectively enhanced students’ understanding and skill colorimetry. Moreover, it underscores ChatGPT’s ability to empower pre-service teachers by strengthening their content knowledge and modeling innovative pedagogical practices for future teaching. Finally, the study emphasizes the need for training and support to help pre-service teachers effectively implement ChatGPT or other generative artificial intelligence models in classrooms, thereby enriching their students’ learning experiences.
