Assessment of antibacterial, antibiofilm, and physicochemical characteristics of Curcuma longa L. extract and soap containing C. longa extract against Staphylococcus aureus
Abstract
Staphylococcus aureus is a main cause of infections in humans and animals, and it is increasingly a concern because of antibiotic resistance. This research examined the antibacterial, antibiofilm and physicochemical abilities of Curcuma longa L. rhizome ethanol extract and a turmeric-based soap against S. aureus isolates obtained from humans and bovine. The antibacterial activity of C. longa extract was seen at concentrations ranging from 0.06 mg/mL to 1.0 mg/mL and biofilm inhibition up to 51% in bovine and 47% in human isolates. The C. longa soap showed some ability to inhibit growth, with MIC values for this range: 0.781% to 6.25% (v/v). Soap made from C. longa greatly reduced the growth of bacteria in biofilms, ranging from 47 to 71% in human isolates and 66% to 78% in bovine mastitis. According to the phytochemical analysis the C. longa extract and the soap exhibited the high level of antioxidants, phenolic compounds and flavonoids that are believed to have contributed to its high bioactivity. Altogether, this information suggested that C. longa extract and the soap containing the extract could inhibit the growth and biofilm of clinically S. aureus isolates that may lead to apply in the veterinary and medical cares.
