Rheology of Red Mud Slurries and Digestion Liquor: Effects of Modifier Dosage and Conditions
Abstract
Efficient management of red mud slurry is crucial in alumina production due to its high solids content and complex flow behavior. This study investigates the influence of chemical modifiers on the rheological characteristics of 40%–50% solids slurries and digestion liquor. Moderate modifier addition reduced viscosity by over 80% at lower shear rates, whereas higher dosages were less effective due to particle aggregation. Flowability also improved at elevated temperatures, with significant reductions observed near 70°C. These results demonstrate that optimized modifier dosing and operational conditions can enhance slurry pumpability, reduce energy consumption, and improve industrial processing. Key topics include slurry rheology, chemical modification, and process optimization.
